In Brief .....

The World Capital of Women and Girls in Science is a global initiative that will be offered under the auspices of the Royal Academy of Science International Trust (RASIT) to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in science and place these issues at the heart of the world’s attention for a yearlong celebration.

RASIT is internationally recognized as the pioneering non-governmental body to introduce and facilitate a United Nations General Assembly Resolution A/RES/70/212, proclaiming February 11 as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

Following the adoption of the UNGA Resolution A/RES/70/212 on 22nd December 2015, RASIT continues to work with UN Member States, Inter-Governmental Organizations and the United Nations and its entities, to contribute towards the achievement of equality in science, technology, and innovation for socio-economic sustainable development in line with Agenda 2030 and the SDGs.

Per the recommendation of RASIT's Executive Director HRH Princess Dr. Nisreen El-Hashemite, evaluations of the impact of the 2016-2019 International Days of Women and Girls in Science has been conducted.

The conclusion of the study revealed the need for a new initiative to support countries in acheiving equality, diversity, and inclusion in science, technology, and innovation by 2030 and beyond.

In February 2020, RASIT launched the "World Capital of Women and Girls in Science” Global Initiative, which is recognized and endorsed by 77 UN Member States including the African Union.

The World Capital of Women & Girls in Science

aims to achieve

Equity, diversity, and inclusion in all fields of science, technology, and innovation by 2030 and beyond.

Greater investment in science-based solutions for the world’s challenges

Increased capacity building, partnership, and collaboration in science and technology

The World Capital of Women & Girls in Science

is designed to

  • Highlight the contributions that science, technology, and innovation make to peace, prosperity, and inclusive, sustainable socio-economic development.
  • Raise the international profile of designated countries and further their collaboration with other countries to promote sustainable socio-economic development.
  • Enhance the image of women in science – both internationally and in their own countries. This includes nurturing and celebrating the contributions that women in science make to global development and to the socio-economic development of their own countries, under their respective strategies and priorities.
  • Promote girls’ interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM).
  • Accentuate the features of science that we all share to increase the world’s citizens' sense of belonging to a global community, which is science.

The World Capital of Women & Girls in Science

How it works ..?

  • An independent International Committee, comprised of 12 renowned experts from a variety of countries, disciplines and backgrounds, will select the country that will hold the title of the “World Capital Country”.
  • The title, World Capital Country of Women and Girls in Science, will be held for the period of one year.
  • Up to three (3) countries, representing different global regions, may be designated per year to hold the title.
  • The designated “Capital Country” will develop and implement a year-long program of scientific social, and economic activities that are consistent with, and will help achieve, the goals of the CAPITAL Initiative.

It is imperative to note that none of the fields of science can progress and advance without a healthy social environment based on equality between men and women in all areas of life. Definitely, science will not thrive and advance in weak and poorly structured societies, where discrimination and distinction between women and men exist.
